Google Classroom Updates - September 2023

Welcome back to a new and exciting school year! We are happy to report that our immediate tech hardware issues are being addressed quickly and things should be working as expected. Remember that if you have a hardware issue, putting in a ticket is the fastest way to get help!

This year Google Classroom has added three new enhancements that we think are just amazing! If you need a refresher on Google Classroom, reach out to your building's Tech Coach to book a training appointment

What’s New in Google Classroom September 2023

1. Close Submissions After Due Date

You asked, and Google responded! Now, teachers have the ability to close submissions after the due date. Students are not able to turn in the assignment after the due date (and time if desired). Side note, students are still able to edit the Google Doc attached to the assignment after the due date, but you can use version history to see what time that was done!

2. Set Grading Periods

If you are a Google Classroom grader, you will LOVE this new feature. You now have the ability to create grading periods (ex: MP 1, 2, 3, 4) and only show that period in your Google Classroom gradebook. So no more endless scrolling over to get to the newer grades. To set this up, click on the Settings gear, scroll down to periods and get typing!

3. Create a Custom Grading Scale

This is a great feature for those Google Classroom graders who like to tell students, "That assignment got a B+" and not just an 88%. To set this up, click on the Settings gear, scroll down to grading scale and either add a pre-created from Google or create your own grading scale. A point of clarification: this grading scale is applied to all your assignments, so if you have a grading scale you use for all assignments, this may be helpful.

Bonus - Practice Sets

While not brand new this year, Practice Sets in Google Classroom is a built-in way to create interactive assignments, save time with the auto grade tool and identify concepts that need more instruction. While the task of building from scratch a practice set can be cumbersome, we are hoping that in the future Google offers some ready to use practice sets.

As always, our Tech Team is happy to help! Please reach out to your building’s Tech Coach with any additional Technology training needs, or put in an IIQ ticket for hardware issues. Thank you!
